category definitions
The following provides definitions for each of the core safety categories across which AdSafe provides ratings for its Base Safety product. Additional rating categories are included in AdSafe's Industry Solutions and Customizable Protection.

| Guns, Bombs and Ammunition | Sites which describe or provide information on weapons including guns, rifles, bombs, ammunition; sites which display and/or discuss how to obtain weapons, manufacture weapons, trading of weapons whether legal or illegally; sites which describe or offer for sale weapons including guns, ammunition, and firearm accessories. |
| Alcohol | Sites which contains information relating to alcohol, recipes for mixing drinks and reviews and locations for bars and pubs. |
| Offensive Language | Sites that contain swear words, profanity; hard language; inappropriate phrases and/or expressions |
| Hate Speech | Sites which advocate hostility or aggression toward individuals or groups on the basis of race, religion, gender, nationality, ethnic origin, or other involuntary characteristics; sites which denigrate others on the basis of those characteristics or justifies inequality on the basis of those characteristics; sites which purport to use scientific or other commonly accredited methods to justify said aggression, hostility or denigration. |
| Tobacco | Sites which contain information related to smoking, cigarettes, chewing tobacco, pipes, rolling tobacco, cigarette lighters. |
| Spyware Malware | Sites which promote or provide the means to practice illegal or unauthorized acts of computer crime using technology or computer-programming skills. |
| Illegal Drugs | Sites which provide instruction for or information about illegal drugs: how to obtain, how to manufacture, how to use. Information about evading or circumventing the law - drug and alcohol testing sabotage, drug smuggling, trafficking, selling or buying |
| Adult Content | Site which potentially contain nudity, sex, use of sexual language, sexual references, sexual images and/or sexual themes |
| Gaming / Gambling | Sites which include online social games, information on card, board, computer and electronic games; sites which allow gambling and / or provide information on gambling. |
| Entertainment | Sites relating to arts & culture, lifestyle & activities, gossip, humor, match making and downloads. Downloads are defined as sites that allow users to download music, videos, images, etc. |
| Legality | Sites which provide instruction for threatening or violating the security of property or the privacy of people; also how to avoid complying with legally mandated duties and obligations. Examples include:
- Theft - how to steal money, goods, services or any other form of intellectual property
- Lock-picking and burglary - how to defeat locks, locking mechanisms and alarms; breaking and entering
- Fraud - how to create or obtain fake ids and documents; identity theft; credit card number stealing
- Telephone crime - Phone tapping, how to intercept phone calls
- Evading or circumventing the law - drug and alcohol testing sabotage, tax protesting, illegal equipment modifications, police radar jamming, smuggling

| Obscenity | Sites which display graphic violence and/or the infliction of pain or injuries. Gross violence towards humans or animals such as scenes of dismemberment, torture, massive blood and gore, sadism and other types of excessive violence. |
